Let’s face it—unless you are in the medical field… scratch that, unless you are in the orthopedic field, you have probably never heard of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES).
I know I hadn’t heard of ASES until I got interested in shoulder and elbow surgery.

Meet the ASES
Now that you have heard of the ASES, let me give you a quick introduction—and share why it might matter to you.
The ASES is a small but incredibly dedicated organization committed to promoting excellence in shoulder and elbow care. Its members include some of the world’s top experts in this subspecialty—many of whom lead major university departments and high-performing practices across the country.
The group’s mission? To establish and promote scientifically sound, evidence-based treatments for shoulder and elbow problems through rigorous research and education.
A Milestone Year
Incidentally, this year the ASES is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
It started when a group of like-minded surgeons came together to share ideas and research about vexing shoulder and elbow problems. When the ASES began, shoulder arthroscopy was in its infancy and the modern reverse shoulder replacement didn’t exist.
A lot has changed since then. ASES members have often been at the forefront of revolutionizing the field of shoulder and elbow surgery.
A Personal Point of Pride
It is with great pride that I get to call myself a member of this organization and lead this worthy mission of bringing National Shoulder and Elbow Week (NSEW) to Buffalo.
Why Should YOU Care?
Simply put: there’s virtually a 100% chance that either you or someone you know will have shoulder or elbow pain at some point in your life.
Whether it’s something common like tennis elbow or something more rare but severe like shoulder arthritis, you will likely be touched. And as you may know, shoulder and elbow pain are no fun.
I’ve had both, and it can be miserable.
My patients often describe shoulder and elbow pain as:
- Stabbing
- Aching
- Like a toothache
- Burning
You get the picture.
What the ASES Foundation Is Doing
The ASESF is raising money to help better treat people with shoulder and elbow pain.
Funds go toward:
- Finding new treatments
- Educating doctors
- Funding research to improve existing treatments
- Promoting those treatments best supported by science
Come Join Us in Buffalo
