When I moved to Buffalo in 2016, I discovered a gem.
I am part of the UBMD practice and we are aligned with the University at Buffalo. The University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine had recently moved into its Downtown Buffalo campus when I first started working here in 2016. The campus houses a state of the art, arthroscopy, situation and cadaver laboratory space that would serve a training ground for new surgeons and medical students.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. I did not have anything like this in my training. It was like Santa’s workshop for an orthopedic surgeon: video-game like simulation trainers, plastic arthroscopic model simulators, knot tying stations, the best cadaver donor program in NY state and all in an environment that mimicked the actual OR experience.
I immediately signed on to teach labs every month and since have become the co director of the lab with my good friend and partner Dr. Michael Rauh, team doctor for the Buffalo Bandits.
I’ve never seen a center like this that serves just one university program. It’s an amazing facility and I am proud to teach there. We do regular labs for the residents and medical students and do our “Orthopedic Bootcamp” an intensive month long orientation to teach surgical and nonsurgical skills for the incoming orthopedic residents.
This is the facility that I wanted to showcase and show the rest of the country and thanks to NSEW Buffalo 2024 we will.
In addition to our evening fundraising event/ symposium for NSEW, 2024 on May 17 at the Darwin Martin House, we will be hosting an afternoon educational session led by my esteemed colleague Dr. Thomas Duquin where we introduce medical students to some of the simulation tools that we use to teach shoulder and elbow surgery. The session will be between 1-3 PM at the Ralph Wilson arthroscopy lab and simulation center.
Below are some pictures of the center with Dr. John Marzo director emeritus of the laboratory and simulation center.
